Recognizing the Signs of Vitiligo
Vitiligo often starts with milky-white patches on the skin—this is the most noticeable sign of the condition. These patches can appear anywhere on your body, but they’re more common in areas that get a lot of sun exposure, like your hands, face, arms, and feet. While the most obvious sign is pigment loss, there are a few other changes you might notice:
•Premature graying or whitening of hair on your scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes, or beard.
•Loss of color in the tissues lining your mouth (mucous membranes).
•Color changes in the retina, the inner layer of your eye.
Where Does Vitiligo Usually Show Up?
While vitiligo can develop anywhere, the first signs often appear on sun-exposed areas. It can show up at any age but typically starts between ages 20 and 30.
Patterns of Vitiligo
Vitiligo doesn’t look the same for everyone. Here are the three main patterns:
1.Focal Vitiligo:
•White patches are limited to one or just a few areas on your body.
2.Segmental Vitiligo:
•Depigmentation appears only on one side of your body.
•This type is more common in children and tends to progress less over time.
3.Generalized Vitiligo:
•This is the most common type, with pigment loss widespread across different parts of the body.
What’s the Progression o Vitiligo Like?
The course of vitiligo can be unpredictable. For some, the patches may stop forming without treatment, while for others, depigmentation may gradually cover more of the body. While there’s no surefire way to predict how it will progress, staying informed and exploring treatment options can help you feel more in control.
Embrace Your Skin
Vitiligo might feel overwhelming at first, but recognizing the signs is the first step toward understanding it. Whether you’re just noticing changes or have lived with vitiligo for years, knowing your options and connecting with support can make a huge difference.
