Well, ladies and gentleman, it seems like vitiligo is really starting to get the attention of the media! Covergirl has just released a media campaign showcasing Vitiligo model, Amy Deanna, and her vitiligo. The time may be near where vitiligo starts to become more commercialized. This will lead to hopefully, more people becoming familiar with the skin conditions most of us struggle with. In the Vitiligo Cover/Corner community, I really wanted to build an environment where we all felt confident to be ourselves and learn how to live a 90/10 lifestyle. By this, I mean feeling confident with our vitiligo 90% of the time and trying our hardest to really allow only 10% of down or sadness.
And as it turns out, Covergirl picked Amy for their commercial based on her confidence! She told NewsFix, “I did a vitiligo hashtag and I have my portfolio on my Instagram, so when they saw my portfolio they were like, ‘Wow, this girl, she looks amazing. She looks super confident. Why don’t we reach out to her?'”
So what does this mean for the rest of us? It means there’s hope for us! Hope that we will live in a world where we can feel comfortable covering our vitiligo or going bare skin. The difference is we get to choose.
