Could Chickpeas (urad) cure vitiligo?

chickpeasYesterday I was speaking to a friend of mine in Paris who has vitiligo and is continually looking for new curative ideas. He forwarded some new information he found about the use of black chickpeas from India (urad) which looks promising to some Indian scientists.

Here is the article:

Varanasi, Jan 27 (IANS) Chickpeas hold the cure for leukoderma, a chronic skin disease that causes loss of pigment, resulting in white spots or patches on the skin, claim scientists of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU).

In a research project undertaken jointly by the varsity’s medicinal chemistry and skin departments, scientists have found that application of a poly-herbal ointment with chickpeas as its base can efficiently treat leucoderma or vitiligo, controlling the spread of the skin disease that is widely feared for the unsightly white patches it produces.

‘The results were encouraging,’ said an elated Yamini Tripathi, a professor with BHU’s medicinal chemistry department and a member of the research team, told IANS.

The chickpea therapy has been tried on 50 patients, who got ‘considerable relief from the skin disorder’, added Tripathi, who has now approached the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) for a major research project on vitiligo treatment.

According to the researchers, patients who applied the chickpea-based cream on affected parts of the skin for 20-90 days found their normal skin pigmentation had returned.

In the fastest cure, a young scooter mechanic here saw the white patches disappear within 28 days.

‘Such a speedy result surprised even us. When we asked for his feedback, he said during his vitiligo treatment he included a good amount of chickpeas in his regular diet,’ said Tripathi.

Vitiligo is an autoimmune disease in which the body starts producing antibodies that destroy cells known as melanocytes that give the skin its normal colour. Gradually, the affected areas of the skin turn white, which is one of the most common symptoms of vitiligo.

BHU researchers say that the anti-vitiligo ointment derives its potency from amino acids found in chickpeas.

‘Amino acids found in chickpeas promote synthesis of melanin (skin pigment) formation cells, regenerates the pigment cells and help in treating the chronic skin disorder,’ said Tripathi.

In vitiligo patients, white patches are more obvious in sun-exposed areas, including arms, legs, face and lips. Other common areas for white patches to appear are the armpits and groin, around mouth and eyes.

S.N. Ojha, a doctor who is also the member of the research team, said that at present there is no definite method to prevent vitiligo. ‘It is heartening that our chickpea therapy can offer a promising and cost-effective treatment,’ he added.

  1. Just between you and me… It is complete hogwash. Stay away from it. Just look at their Vitmain C recommendations..It contradicts everybody else. Plus, I have not seen single person with positive feedback. They are are what I call commercial “Vitiligo victim robbers”

  2. Is chick Peas are “Urad” beans or “Channa”? Beans. In north america, Indian grocery stores sells it as “channa”. Please clarify.

  3. Hi

Can anyone tell me if this product is on the market yet? If not what are the chances of making it at home?

    Any feedback will be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Scott

  4. I wud like to add that chickpea and urad are totally different…Chickpea actually refers to Chana in hindi..U can search for chickpea’s image on net to find out for urself..

For leucoderma, chickpea is recommended and not urad..
    Thanks.

  5. Hi,

Have Anybody tried DR Shah’s (LifeForce) Homeopathy ?? How effective is it ??
I am having Dr Shah’s medicine from last 2 months but dint see any benifit yet…

    Anybody Please Update..

  6. I had 2 short episodes of vitiligo as a child (about 3 months). B-complex vitamins helped then…and then in my 40s, under high stress it returned, and has been more extensive and more difficult to get rid of. UV has been minimally effective. I believe it is a systemic disease with outward symptoms on the skin, in my case, this time, mostly my face. Exercise, proper nutrition, and good elimination have helped in the past, but now in my 50s, I need more. It is ever so slowly improving, but I want to speed the process. I do believe that people are biochemically unique, so what works for some may not always work as well for others. I want to try the chickpeas, urad dal,and some other things I found on the net today, like coconut oil, Selsum Blue, Phenylalanine, etc to see what works for me. I think some things may need to be combined to work, so if you are doing something healthy without results, maybe the answer is to add something else.

  7. I am suffering from Vitilgo and it seems like it is coming back.

I am From India Originally but currently in US. Know everything about Urad Daal and Chick Peas and eat these probably once every week. Also we eat hummus which is made out of Garbanzo beans / Chick peas.

I wish BHU comes up and make a claim and share their theises and research with general public and make this product available in market for Vitilgo Patients if there is any truth to this claim. It has already been around 2 years since they made this claim.

If getting rid of Vitilgo was as easy as eating choley or taking Amino Acid supliments then world would have been vitilgo free by now

Way to raise people’s hope and dash them…

  8. Hi folks,

I am currently under medication. I have had vitiligo since 2001. I was using some liquid paste back then, when i get time. i guess it helped me stopped spearding at fast paste. now after i finished my graduation, i decided to uproot this stubborn disease and have some success. I will upload my pics soon (first week of september and will discuss more then). Anyways till then good luck all, and stay away from stress.

    God Bless All,

  9. Aside from the chick peas and other things already mentioned in the blog I read that kingko biloba and b100complex help to repigment the skin. A lady saw my vitiligo and gave me an empty bottle of b100 complex. I saw her vitiligo repigmenting in some areas. I just bought some so I hope it works.

  10. My 13 year old son has developed patches on his elbow, knees and Hands. It seems like Jason’s cream might help. I am going to drug store to purchase items… Is there a cream that has already been put together?

I gather from the comment Milk and Protein is not a good idea. It that Red meat protein or all protein

Does anyone have a before and after PIC on any treatment that worked

    New to Vitiligo

    Thanks

  11. seriously, this blog is well-done . I think im gonna stick around and read about 3 more of your posts. ttyl

  12. Jason,
What were your exact measurements of your Vitilvenz cream and how often did you apply it to affected areas? I was actually approached by someone from Venezuela on poolside while on vacation in Mexico that told me that he was currently in the study and it has worked very well for him. He told me to look out for it in the future. He had no interest in it, just wanted to share his story and give me hope.

  13. after researching had wrong type of chick pea. and like Thomas said if it is a protien then we could just go out and buy the protien or amnio acid it was

  14. The cure is a hoax, it happens every year, some group of people claim to have cured it, sell alot of products at a high price and claim that it will take 3-4 months to see result. And guess what? After 4 months, the people are never to be seen or heard again.

  15. i m vitiligo patients since,8yrs

  16. Hi…
I was told by a viewer of a European news from Romania,
that by making a Tea paste of the raw green walnuts from picked from the tree and apply it to your vitiligo white spots you will get the pigmintation returned!
so i will try it now.
    we will see what happenes:)
    all the best to all

  17. Hi all,

I am eating and applying brown chickpeas to my skin. I will do this religiously for 3 months! I had a little go for about 2 weeks with no change, but I’m going to give this a real good chance to work. I’ll keep posting here.

Please pray with me that this works for myself and others.

    Kind regards Mark

  18. Has anyone found an improvement yet by following the regime reccommended by Proffessor Yamini……the chikpea one?
Well i haven’t yet,so i imformed the proffessor to which he replied to give it up….and also that the cream would probably not work on me.
Talk about major dissappointment. I just dont get it. If by eating chickpeas etc one is supposed to repigment..then what’s the point of the cream? Instead of announcing to the world that they have a cure for vitiligo why didn’t they just tell everyone to eat chickpeas.
none of this makes sense to me and its all always so so complicated

  27. Just reading about this for the first time. Please who knows anyone who deals on this that might want to export to Africa. Havent really searched for it, but dont even know what is called here in Africa. it might be common here but I need to know and identify it

  28. All,

I am an Indian and I know the difference between URAD and ChickPeas.

According to the new article they used chick peas. So URAD (the one shown in the picture is not the one to take).

Chickpeas come in various shapes and colours… I think you can use either black, green or white ones. Even Garbanzo is a type of chickpea.

    hope this helps..

  29. I’m confused too because each article I find on this subject seems to have different info. I have put an email in to the scientists quoted in the articles; hopefully they will get back to me with 1 answer. ;)

  30. I am so confused now! Is it chickpeas to eat…urad beans for cream….urad to eat and as cream? garbanzo/chickpeas/brown one/black one……. Yikes, someone clarify if they know.
I purchased beans that look just like to one in the picture, what do I do now?

    Much appreciation!

  31. Hello,

Can you explain how to eat the Chick Peas ?

According to your post we need to boil it in GHEE? but even GHEE is Milk based product so it ok to boil it in GHEE?

According to the study they applied chickpea paste did you speak to the professor about that?

If you have any email from the professor can you post it?

    Please let us know.

    Regards

  32. Hello

I contacted the Professor YAMINI BHUSHAN TRIPATHI scientists of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Head of Research team, who advised :

(1). stick to CHICK PEA ( cicer arietinum , also garbanzo bean, ceci bean, bengal gram CHANA [ NOT URAD — the one shown in the photograph above ] as part of the protien in the diet. (It is brown in colour ) 200 – 250 gms to be consumed in any form — recommended with ” GHEE ” ( MELTED UNSALTED BUTTER { BOIL THE BUTTER FOR QUITE SOME TIME — IT BECOMES / AND CALLED “GHEE” in HINDI )

(2). AVOID MILK & MEAT PROTIEN

(3). GOOD Physical Excercise so as to start sweating & / or SAUNA bath
    (steam bath)
Hope this info will be useful.

  33. Hi everyone – I am only going to update the ‘Jason’s Experiment’ forum/thread from now on, as I don’t want to cross-post. This is accessible from the vitiligocover.com website.

Good news is that the ‘Vitilvenz’ compound (see above posts about various plant extracts) is working really well on the remaining areas of Vitiligo that I have. This is, in my opinion, the most hopeful treatment I have trialled. The areas of my skin that are freckled are becoming very evenly pigmented, and relatively quickly too.

I’d recommend it – but be careful not to use too strong a mixture – it can make the skin a bit irritated.

I’ll keep you posted from the “Jason’s Experiment” thread/forum.

    Jason.

  34. Jason,
Vitiligo cover lotion comes in a 6oz bottle. I make no mention of how many applications because there are too many variables to consider: how much lotion is used for each application- just on the patches or all over (as recommended), the size of the person using the lotion, how often the lotion is applied…

A comment page is included on the site from which all questions are directly emailed to me. also, I have included a phone number. Either one of these would be a better venue since this comment area is read by those reading the related article.

    Thanks,
    Nathalie

  35. Jason, don’t be disappointed. You have to try and see if it works for you…remember, there doesn’t seem to be one cure for everyone. Was you dermatologist positive abt the treatment because other patients have re-pigmented? One bit of advice, if you’re going to the tanning beds, you might want to be sure that the bulbs are UVA only because those penetrate deep down and are less harmful than uvb.
    all the best
    nathalie

  36. Ok Nat,
thanke you for your answer and as czech proverb says:
“Better light chickpea than to have a wire in your eye” …. It is a shame that it could be here in shops ….
You know, HOPE is SO IMPORTANT for as
… Because HOPE gives us a power to fight and continue :(
And when you desponds it is sad.

  37. Hi Eva,

There is a difference between the light chickpea and black (urad); a quick google search will have full details. The reader who had told me about this treatment got the info straight from the doctors involved with the study…the pigmentation results were found when using the urad bean.

    all the best
    nathalie

  38. Hi Jason,

Thank you for your comment. There has been no mention of pseudocatalase on this site because I’d never heard of it, but upon investigation, it looks like a study in 2004 showed that it had no effect on vitiligo ( ). I was surprised that their site, pseudocatalase.com, didn’t have any before and after photo’s of their clinical test results.

    nathalie

  39. Hi Nathalie, I am sorry for czech question (higher) I didn.t notice … anyway .. Could I ask where is possible to get BLACK CHCIPEA – especialy here in Czech republic – cause I cant find it … We only have CHICKPEA in light colour … and in the arcitle is “Black” chickpea .. where is the difference? Thanke you Eve

  40. Zdravím,
koukala jsem na googlu a u nas jsem nasla pouze “cizrnu” … nevite zda je ?erná cizrna nejaky jiny druh? Pripadne kde se dá sehnat?
    Dekuji

  41. Hi all,

Since I started researching vitiligo, i.e. soon after I first got vitiligo about 18 months ago, I have always searched for new developments by limiting my Web search results to new content – i.e. within the last month.

Like you guys, I did see the information on chickpeas, and I had already tried piperine, with some success in combination with NB UVB.

More recently, I found information that a very promising topical treatment had been discovered in Venezuela by some researchers who have named the treatment ‘Vitilvenz.’ Most info about this is currently in Spanish, but the patent is published in English. The ingredients are:

    Extract of Pimienta racemosa
    Extract of Citrus aurantifolia
    Coenzyme Q-10
    Pyridoxine Chlorhydrate
    Extract of Cucumis melo

Out of curiosity, I looked these up and found I could easily purchase the first four of these ingredients, the first two of which are available in the form of an essential oil.

I have applied this mixture (in a carrier oil – avocado) to vitiligo areas that have resisted treatments that I have tried and discussed in my former posts – i.e. NB UVB + some other topical treatments, including piperine.

I have been doing this for only a week, and I have to say that the early indications are extremely good. I have noted signs of improvement in the most obstinate remaining areas of vitiligo very quickly – everything else I have been doing has been painfully slow!

I have used myself as a bit of guinea pig ever since I got vitiligo, and to be honest, this seems to be the most promising treatment I have tried – to the extent that I have actually stopped everything else, including NB UVB and piperine, in favour of this.

I will certainly update this forum as I continue to try this topical treatment that seems amazingly simple and promising.

    Jason.

  42. How effective is this cream supposed to be?

Several articles say that it brought back pigment, but does not say how much? Is it complete pigmentation or just partial?

  43. Hello,

I add info to this news.

In fact we must eat 250g/day of brown chickpeas (kala chana or desi) for 3 months. becarefull donc eat standard chickpeas (white or Kabuli)

Donc smoke, dont drink milk or eat meat protein for 3 months. Doing Good physical exercise so start sweating (its important)

You must apply flour of urad (black gram) on white patch too for 3 months

    Thats all :)

  44. Hi Natalie,

Do you have an idea how long it will take for this ointment to be available to the general public?

    Thanks

  45. gt the urad beans but dont know how to use them….they are of two types…with cover and without cover…which one to use and how??? hope anyone can guide me…

  46. hey tanx a lot..was pretty confused about this……so will get this as soon as possible…n wat was the method they used it?? groung dry urad beans???or soak them n then grind them??

  47. hey tanx….a lott..was pretty confused about this……so will get this as soon as possible…n wat was the method they used it?? groung dry urad beans???or soak them n then grinf them??

  48. Juone, a man in France with vitiligo, contacted me and told me about the ‘Chickpea’ research going on in India. He also went so far as to contact one of the scientists, via email, and got the straight scoop.

The positive re-pigmentation results were found with the Urad bean, also known as Black Gram – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urad_(bean). Perhaps it was an issue of mistranslation in the article which refers to the bean as ‘chickpea’ which is causing such confusion, but since Juone got his information directly from someone involved with the research, I’d go with the Urad bean. Your best chance of finding Urad would be at an Indian grocer since it is native to India.

  49. searched a lot about this..can u clear my confusion about the chickpeas and urad??? n net tey both are different… and if its chikpea is it black one or white one???

  50. Kan dette produktet kjøpes i Norge eller hvor i verden kan jeg få fatt mi det? kvadratmeter

  51. Anne: i think you can find chick peas at most grocery stores, but you can definitely find them at an Indian or south Asian grocer.

  52. This sounds fantastic. Those of us with Vitiligo are searching in vain for something to re-pigment our skin. Mine is partly from skin damage, and some spots just appeared. I would LOVE to be able to get this product somewhere, and also, where can I find these beans to add to my diet

  53. just wondering the same question as esayas, how do i get this product
& russell, how do you apply this, with what do you mix the chickpeas to get a ointment?

  54. maybe this sounds stupid but will you get the same results if you add chick peas to your diet, or does the extract need to be applied directly to the skin?
