Nathalie talks with a stranger at a cafe, Elizabeth, about what looks like vitiligo white patches on her arms and forehead, but is actually a condition she was born with. Elizabeth grew up in a family that called her white patches “birthmarks”, and 1 out of every 3 family members have the birthmarks, as well…what’s more, she’s been told that as far back as they’ve been able to trace their genealogy these ‘birthmarks’ are found. This week Elizabeth visited a new doctor for an unrelated health issue and was told that her white patches are actually not birthmarks…Elizabeth explains more in this conversation.
My grandson is 9 months old, but from about 1 month old we thought he had vitiligo. But as time went on, his white patches, which look like bunched up clouds moved from his left shin up his leg, hip and buttocks in the shape of an ‘S’. After going to a pediatric derm.doc and having it biopsied (because the new white skin was rough) they diagnosed him to having mosaic pigmentation.
The only one in my family with vitiligo on EITHER sides of my family or husbands family is our son,he has very little on his head (gray patch of hair now), eye lids, base of his hairline in the back and on his thigh.
The doc that my grandson is seeing said this will stop traveling. It is now over his diaper area–to the middle of his back. They were concerned at first that he had a very serious genetic disease, but he is very healthy since birth and is hitting all of his milestones. Do you know much about this condition and if so do you have any references as to what to expect in the future for our grandson?
Thanks!
Very interesting!!
Nice of you to do that for us Natalie.
(You sound like such a nice person)
She is lucky at least, that it doesn’t spread.
thanks
